Tatkal service is for emergency and urgent cases of Indians requiring passports. You are eligible to apply for the renewal of your passport through the Tatkal scheme, if you are an Indian living in the U.S. who has a valid passport and a valid visa status (This could be visa page/EAD/green card or I-797A approval notice). The following applicants are not eligible for Tatkal renewal.
The processing time is 3 to 4 business days (not including VFS’s processing time), if:
If the Police Verification Report (PVR) has not been cleared or is still pending, then the processing time will take about 30 days or maybe more (not including VFS’s processing time).
In such cases, the processing time will depend on the PVR to be cleared by the concerned authorities in India.
In complicated cases like adoption, application on behalf of a minor from a single parent, a major name change, duplicate passport and doubtful documentation, the processing time will be about 30 days or more (not including VFS’s processing time).
